Hey all, long time since I did a article on Opensim. But I am still playing with it all the time. I currently have 3 different stand alone sims running at home using a new Distribution named Diva Distributional.
What is the Diva Distribution. Diva is actually one of the core developers of Opensim, and delicates a lot of her time to not only making it work, but making it work well. She put together a small package called the Diva Distribution, that not only makes it easy to install, it also has an update application to keep your sim up to date. The Diva Distribution is a stand alone mega sim with hypergrid enabled. A mega sim is a 512x512 sim (four times larger than normal sim) which are new. Stand alone means that this is not using Grid mode, which is what we set up in the past. But this is not a bad thing, the line between stand alone and grid mode, is really starting to blur with all the work they have done. Hypergrid means you can teleport from your opensim, to your friends. Its awesome!
I took today and yesterday off from working on the TNT Primz... Instead I started playing with OpenSim again. I was trying out a distro called Diva Distribution.
The Diva Distribution comes with Hypergrid Technology and the new Mega Sims all pre-configured. Read More..
Today I learned of something very exciting, something that makes me even more excited about OpenSim.
If you're like me, you tolerate LSL because, there is no other choice. For years, I have wished for a real programming language like C#, with full access to the core sim components. Well, turns out I am not the only one that has this dream, and guess what... The dream is coming true! *wipes the tears from his eyes*
Like most of you, running an application on the internet with open ports, especially a program still in Alpha development makes me a little nervous. So I started exploring different security options I could apply to help reduce the risk. While this will continue to be something I explore, I thought I would share what I have found so far.
I have been having tons of fun in my OpenLife Sim. I have been building this huge military bunker, 15 sims up and running with several friends joining me in there daily to play around.
Now that we have our database setup, its now time to set up your sim/grid.
For my configurations, I figured I might as well run in Grid mode. What does this mean? Well OpenSim can run in two ways, which are grid, and standalone. While this might not be the best choice for most people, for me it makes sense since I want to try and experiment as much as possible. When running in grid mode, I could distribute the load of five different servers on different machines if I liked. I don't plan on doing this for the tutorial.
I found a lot of documentation on this subject already, but I thought I would throw my own guide out there as well. I wanted to go from beginning to end of setting up a well configured, highly robust, and easy to expand OpenSim.
